How to Style Medium Length Hair

Have you ever seen celebrities in person or how about beauty/fashion bloggers? When I do, I really admire how well put together they are – starting with their blow-dried, flawless, and sometimes curled hair. I thought it was impossible for busy and frugal moms like me to achieve.

How to Style Medium Length Hair

Simple & affordable tools & products to achieve salon hair

Until I decided to make an effort with what I can find inside the house. These are the following, please note not yet in order of use. We will get to that later:

1. Hair cuticle coat – this has been in my mother’s cabinet for a while until I decided to squeeze a few on my palm and apply on my freshly (still a little damp) showered hair. It also works even if your hair is already dry. The product is like an instant leave on conditioner which is not too heavy. It reduces frizz and makes hair more manageable, even with just your fingers.

I already finished my mother’s stash so I bought one today at Watsons.

2. Hair spray – I guested on TV a few times and was treated to free hair & make-up every time. I asked the stylist what hair spray he is using and he showed me a bottle of this brand:

My impression was that hair sprays were too 70’s and that are too expensive, especially when you’re buying imported brands. This hair spray called Raven is just P99 for the medium bottle. I remember buying one right after the stylist’s advice but never got to use it.

When I decided to make an effort to fix my medium length hair when attending events, I recently started using the hair spray for real. This is mostly for my bangs to stay put up front or on the sides.

3. Conditioner – I couldn’t understand why my younger sister spends a lot of money on conditioners. I’ve used them before but I guess I was too lazy to care about my hair and then regret how unfortunate I look compared to other ladies.

Cream Silk Conditioner + Daily Treatment P150+ in supermarkets

When my family and I had a staycation, there was a free bottle of conditioner which I decided to use. Also in the bathroom was a nice blow dryer. I rediscovered how easy it is to blow dry hair when it is conditioned. Now I use this new conditioner + treatment from Creamsilk. Look for the metallic packaging which indicates that it has double the nutrients and includes treatment compared to the ordinary Creamsilk.

4. Hair blowdryer – I am using my mother’s Jurrassic 3D hair dryer. This is how it looks like:

I don’t have the budget for a fancier version but it sure does the job of achieving sleeker hair that makes me more confident to let my hair down.

How to Style Medium Length Hair in 4 Steps

Step 1: Condition your hair after shampooing. I recommend Cream Silk ordinary or the double-up version which has both conditioner & treatment. Consider the latter if you subject your hair to lots of blowdrying, like I do when I unlocked this method!

Step 2: Towel and when just a little damp, apply hair cuticle coat. I try to avoid the crown area just to make sure it doesn’t look thin or become flat because of the product. Start at the mid-section of your hair with more product applied at the roots. If you have bangs like me, you can run your palm against it gently and on the top of your head, this applies only a little residue of the product after you’ve used it on other areas.

Step 3: Comb and blow dry your hair. With the conditioner and hair cuticle coat, it would be so much easier to blow dry your hair to achieve a salon look. Collect your hair on one side, blow dry and then the other. Then, loosely blowdry the top of your hair and your bangs in the direction you want them to be in.

Step 4: To keep your hair frizz free especially on top, lightly apply hair spray then lightly smooth out with a comb. Also make sure your bangs stay in place by lightly spraying them too. You can put tissue on your forehead to avoid getting hair spray on your face.
