New on Starbucks Menu: 2017 Espresso Handcrafted Beverages

Starbucks Philippines today launched new handcrafted beverage offerings along with never before seen lunch choices. Order a different drink on your next visit and try these beautiful and unique tasting espresso creations:

TAHITIAN VANILLA MACCHIATO

Short – 155, Tall – 165, Grande 180, Venti– 195

This is your summer espresso drink. Enjoy it cold or hot (I prefer hot) and wait for the floral accents and Tahitian vanilla syrup for a playful twist on your usual macchiato. It is also topped with velvety steamed milk  and finished with an authentic crosshatch of vanilla bean sauce and topped with ground vanilla bean pod sprinkles. You know you’ll have a good day when you start it with this flavorful and playful kind of macchiato!

VALENCIA ORANGE COCOA CAPPUCCINO

Short – 145, Tall – 155,  Grande 170, Venti– 185

While it looks more of a dessert than a drink, this really is a cappuccino with an orange twist. It’s an exciting drink to try and yes, suits the summer season with it’s fruity hint. Decadent Valencia Orange Mocha Sauce combined with milk, topped with dense creamy, cappuccino-worthy foam, then layered with affogato-style signature espresso shots, perfectly sweet cocoa powder and tartly-sweet bits of orange peel to add even more flavor.

Spotted at Starbucks SM Bacoor today are these new summer-perfect and colorful tumblers. They cost P675 each and I got this as my new water bottle to bring to my summer outings.

Starbucks Philippines Christmas Grand Launch

Starbucks Philippines is treating fans to their Christmas Grand Launch until tomorrow, October 30 Sunday at Shangri-la Plaza Mall’s Grand Atrium. The event is open to everyone with Starbucks My Rewards members, if you are a Starbucks fan with an active Starbucks Card then you fit this criteria! All you have to do is take a screenshot of your Starbucks My Rewards account page.

This is the same way I entered Day 1 of the Starbucks Christmas Grand Launch. Here is my experience:

I went early 12pm because I know there are many Starbucks fans like me who saw the Facebook announcement, by 12.30pm the line got quiet long and by 1PM the line was back to normal. You will be given the Starbucks Philippines Grand Launch passport.

There are five stations that await all Starbucks fans, each with a surprise activity and prize! The first is the selfie station where you can take fun selfies with Starbucks icons. Post on your Instagram with the hashtags #StarbucksChristmasPH and #SipsOfCheer to earn your first stamp.

Next station is the Starbucks pop-up store where you will be given a Tall Santa Hat Dark Mocha frappuccino, free! This is a preview of the Starbucks Handcrafted Holiday Beverages which will be available starting November 2.

I really enjoyed this fun frappuccino which is chocolatey but not too sweet. The Santa Hat style whipped cream adds cheer to this beverage and really makes it feel like Christmas!

Third station is the Mix and Match game where you can win a prize when you match two Starbucks cards correctly. I won a miniature Starbucks barista apron :)

Fourth station is the coffee forward experience, do finish your frappuccino first because at this station you will be treated to freshly brewed Starbucks Christmas Blend coffee. If you have been dreaming of attending coffee appreciation classes, you’re in luck because Starbucks Baristas demo different ways to brew your Starbucks Christmas Blend including via siphon method.

If you are rather busy and cannot really brew your own coffee just yet, the Starbucks VIA version of the Christmas Blend is also available at the Christmas Grand Launch. This is also a nice Christmas gift idea for your family, friends, officemates, etc.

Fifth station is the create your own Starbucks Christmas Card activity. You will get a FREE Starbucks Christmas card to decorate with glitter glue, metallic pens, etc. Earn a stamp when you show your DIY creation.

When you complete all five stamps, you now have a chance to pick a special Starbucks prize! You can win Starbucks notebooks, tumblers, notepad, bags, tote bags, and other premium Starbucks items. All Starbucks fans will walk away with prizes on top of the Starbucks Grand Launch activities and treats!

To complete the Starbucks Christmas experience, Starbucks Holiday tumblers, mugs, and other holiday gift items are also available at the event. Mugs range from P525 to P995 and tumblers from P626 to P1,195.

2017 Starbucks Philippines Planner

For Starbucks fans, Christmas is not complete without the tradition of collecting Starbucks stickers to redeem their annual Starbucks Planner. Collecting stickers officially start on November 2 and promo card holders must collect a total of 18 stickers to avail their planner of choice.

At the Starbucks Christmas Grand Launch, the 2017 Starbucks Planner was on display. There are two designs this year in two different sizes. The planners each come with a special Starbucks pouch.

I am saving stickers for the Coffee Stain Starbucks Planner although I really like the mermaid pouch too!

New Ways to Enjoy Starbucks at Home

It was in 1997 that the first Starbucks store opened in the Philippines. My first Starbucks experience was in their Pearl Drive store in Ortigas. I would wait for my older sister, then in college at the University of Asia and the Pacific – just across the coffee shop. Now almost 10 years after, I’ve grown older and have learned many ways to enjoy Starbucks.

Starbucks Bottled Frappuccino now officially in the Philippines

Starbucks listened to their loyal customers and have now made the Starbucks Bottled Frappuccino widely available in the Philippines. The ready-to-drink product will be sold in Starbucks stores, bottled section of supermarkets and select convenience stores across the Philippines.

I just bought mine at Starbucks for P120 in Mocha flavor. As a Starbucks fan, I delight in knowing I can enjoy and uplift my mood with a Starbucks experience in a bottle (and inside my refrigerator) anytime. It’s very refreshing to enjoy during free time or when you just need a break from work or whatever it is you are doing.

  • Starbucks Frappuccino® Coffee: A perfect blend of Starbucks® Arabica coffee and creamy milk. Inspired by the original Starbucks Coffee Frappuccino®. (₱ 120)

These frappuccinos are best when you chill them for several hours. Currently I have both flavors waiting to be opened for when watching NetFlix, reading a book, listening to music, etc. You will appreciate the twist cap which you can reseal your Starbucks bottled drink with. No spills and easy to bring anywhere!


Starbucks Teavana

Starbucks is not all about just coffee and so have introduced ways to enjoy tea as well. Recently, Starbucks launched Teavana which allows Starbucks fans and tea lovers to enjoy handcrafted blends of tea.

The Starbucks Teavana line up includes the English Breakfast, Emperor’s Clouds and Mist, Youthberry and the caffeine free Hibiscus tea. The last one is a perfect choice if you’ve had too much coffee. Of the four blends, I have and regularly enjoy the English Breakfast and the Green Tea (Emperor’s Clouds and Mist).

English Breakfast – A handcrafted blend of Indian Assam, Sri Lankan Ceylon and Chinese black tea. This tastes great with or without milk. P525 for 12 sachets.

Emperor’s Clouds and Mist™Exclusively harvested during the month of April and grown on the steep, windy slopes of Huangshan Mountain at 3,500 feet above sea level, this tea has a rich body and a naturally sweet flavor. P525 for 12 sachets.

So I hope you try these new ways to indulge in a Starbucks experience at home. The holiday season is upon us and really, no matter what season it is, it is easy to find ourselves wanting a quick break from all that we do and just sit down, relax, and enjoy a cup of tea.

Starbucks for Matcha Lovers! Green Tea Frappuccino Blended Beverage

My observation is that some people either really love matcha or green tea or totally dislike it. The good news is that matcha lovers turns out to be the silent majority! The green tea beverages of Starbucks namely the Green Tea Latte hot beverage and the Green Tea Frappucino are underrated in my opinion. Finally, green tea gets the limelight it deserves and just before summer is over.

Double Chocolate Green Tea Frappuccino, Tall P175

I learned about the news on Starbucks FB page, for a limited time only matcha lovers’ favorite Green Tea Cream Frappucino Blended Beverage get an update. Until July 25 only, enjoy the Double Chocolate Green Tea Frappuccino infused with crunchy Java Chips layered with a smooth chocolate sauce at the top and bottom of the cup. It is then topped with whipped cream and a light dusting of Green Tea powder.

It was my first time to enjoy it in Starbucks SM Bacoor and I appreciate how enthusiastic our barista was in explaining the new “adventurous” ingredients of the new frappuccino. I agree the chocolate sauce at the bottom is very pleasant to the taste and the texture is also fun – a but gelatinous that makes you wonder what it is exactly. The Double Chocolate Green Tea Frappuccino is a perfect end of summer beverage. For busy moms like me who never had the chance to enjoy summer at the beach, this blended beverage is all we need to cap our summer season just as good.

I’d like to think I am a Starbucks expert when it comes to pairing food, but you know what? Be easy on yourself and check Starbuck’s chalkboard!

Starbucks Sausage and Spinach on Foccacia Bread

I tried one of the newest food items and it’s also GREEN – as in leafy and healthy. This is the Sausage and Spinach on Foccacia bread, perhaps the healthiest sandwich that Starbucks has ever offered? The spinach is not hard to enjoy because it is very creamy. The sausage is meaty and flavorful, I like how chewy it is without being tough to bite. Ask for your foccaccia sandwich to be warmed for best results :)

Other new food items you must know include the best selling (and always out of stock) Chicken Milk Bun, Purple Yam Cheesecake, and finally – Starbucks introduces real Breakfast Pancakes!

Chicken Milk Bun P75 – soft and toasty milk bun filled with mouthwatering smoked sesame chicken fillet topped with sweet cookie crumbs. Best served warm/

Purple Yam Cheesecake P140 per slice – A silken smooth, yet light cheesecake swirled with purple yam and red mung bean and macapuno. An indulgent dessert!

Starbucks Go! Lite Chips

If you love to enjoy your sandwich with crisps, Starbucks now gives us this option. Just look for the new Go! Lite Chips, I know chips are not the healthiest food on earth but I do enjoy them on the sides especially with a hot mug of brewed coffee. Try it and you’ll see why. Also, the Starbucks Go! Lite Chips are “guilt-free” at just 100 calories per bag. The Go Lite! Sweet Maui Onion Cassava Popped Chips are gluten free and trans-fat free.

I saw these chips as I exit the store so now I am enjoying them at home with a freshly brewed cup of Starbucks Colombia beans. It’s a perfect ending to a busy weekend – and finally a mother like me gets to enjoy these treats in silence while catching up on my favorite TV shows.

Starbucks Coffee College Experience

Starbucks Coffee College is similar to the coffee appreciation activities held in Starbucks stores. If you haven’t been and want to experience it with your community, absolutely let your community Starbucks manager know. It was in 2011 when I first attended a Starbucks Coffee Appreciation activity but this was somewhere in BGC. I do look forward to my local Starbucks Store in SM Bacoor to host the same (if they haven’t).

Back to Starbucks Coffee College, this is a 4 hour mini-course on the origin of coffee, production methods, roasting techniques, brewing methods, and food pairing. The activity is in its experimental stage and perhaps, just like coffee appreciation stints – would be soon offered to more Starbucks customers. As for this activity, it was opened to top My Starbucks Rewards customers and some people from the press.

Mommy Lace tip: If you want to be part of Starbucks activities, be serious using your Starbucks Card and do communicate your interest with your local Starbucks store manager.

I traveled far and long to Starbucks Tomas Morato store just to experience what a Starbucks Coffee College is. In the US, Starbucks Coffee College is held for one to two days.  Me, I don’t mind spending a day or two learning about coffee if it means I can maximize our coffee machine and make the perfect cup of coffee each time. To be honest, I struggle choosing coffee beans and was clueless at what the origin implies – until I attended our very own Starbucks Coffee College in the Philippines.

What I learned from Starbucks Coffee College


1. Interesting history of coffee – here’s a conversation starter to any coffee date, did you know that coffee was discovered by an Ethiopian goat herder called Kaldi? The goats ate the fruit of  the coffee plant and Kaldi observed how energetic the goats became. He tested and proved the same effect to himself by eating the same fruit.

Kaldi brought the fruit to the monk who then powdered the coffee and added water. And so the first coffee lovers were born. It’s also interesting to note that women were originally not allowed in coffee houses now known as coffee shops. It’s very hard to imagine.

Another notable moment in the coffee history is the invention of the espresso machine back in 1901. This was followed by the invention of the first automatic espresso machine 22 years after. It was only in 1938 that Nestle commercialized instant coffee and in 1971, Starbucks opened its first store in Pike Place Market.

2. Where does Starbucks source their coffee? Starbucks coffee are sourced in higher regions of the globe. These are Latin America, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. If you buy single origin coffee from Starbucks, you will notice one of these regions identified in the packaging.

3. Coffee processing techniques and how it affects taste – Each region has a unique way of coffee processing which is influenced by the availability of water. In Latin America, most producers use the wash process which involves soaking the coffee cherries/fruit in water for a long period of time. In Africa, since water is scarce – they follow the sundried or natural process. The coffee cherries are not soaked but are laid out to dry in the sun. In Asia, the popular process is semi-washed. The coffee cherries are washed to removed the cherry skin but are left to dry out in the sun with the pulp in tact.

Different processes affect taste as the cherry, skin, and pulp all contribute to the acidity and fruitiness of the coffee.

Washed – produces clean and brighter tasting coffee
Semi-washed – produces fruitier, full-bodied coffee with earthly flavors as it has the longest drying time of all processes.
Natural – produces the boldest, heaviest, and sweeter coffee flavors.

4. Starbucks and roasting profiles – According to the coffee masters, Starbucks prefers dark roast especially for dense high-elevation coffee. Roasting brings out all flavors of the coffee and this is when important compounds are developed. There are three Starbucks roast profiles: blonde roast, medium roast, dark roast.

Blonde – high acidity, light bodied, taste the origin of coffee and not the roast flavor
Medium – sweet, less acid, and higher body
Dark – little taste of origin is left, aromas and flavors of roast are prominent

I personally prefer the blonde and medium roast. I love coffee but I like my coffee smooth and light-bodied. Think of roasting like cooking, the longer you cook the more you develop flavor but at the same time, bitterness.

5. Single origin vs. Blend – this was not discussed but which I inferred after the discussion. Single origin coffee beans are sourced from one country, a region within a country, or sometimes even just a single estate or farm. This allows customers an opportunity to explore distinctive coffees from around the world. On the other hand, a blend is a synergy of coffee from different regions which may be combined to offer a distinct coffee house taste and flavor. Coffee blends offer more complex taste, it’s as if Starbucks has picked the coffee beans from different regions and blended them together for a satisfying cup!

So now I know it’s best for me to buy a Starbucks Blend Coffee like my favorite Casi Cielo, Starbucks Anniversary Blend, and Kape Vinta for now and save myself from the confusion.

Starbucks Coffee and Food Pairing

This answers how we should best order from the Starbucks Coffee and Food menu. From what I understood (while eating), coffee should be paired with food that has similar characteristics to it. During the coffee and food pairing, I was also introduced to enjoying coffee like wine – especially when cold pressed.

Blonde roast that have bright, subtle flavors of citrus with high acidity like the Starbucks Reserve Ethiopia Guji Bukisa are best paired with food that have a hint of citrus like this grilled shrimp salad with calamansi gelee and cherry tomatoes.

Dark roast like the Starbucks Tribute Blend that is spicy, full-bodied, with berry and dark cherry notes are best paired with roast and savory dishes like this Adobo Chicken, Pork, and Beef Adobo sa Balsamic.

Medium roast like the Starbucks VIA Ready Brew Colombia that is balanced and nutty (a characteristic shared by medium roast coffees) are best paired with similar nutty desserts like this Turon sa Halo-Halo. TRY sprinkling Starbucks VIA on your favorite icecream, experiment and discover a new way to express your love for coffee.

My Starbucks Coffee College experience was successful in answering my questions and curiosities as a Starbucks customer. The activity inspired me to be more creative and appreciative of my coffee experience – whether at home or in a Starbucks store. Many will agree that coffee time isn’t just about coffee but a time for relaxation, clarity, and connection with ourselves or with others. The Starbucks Coffee College absolutely helps us improve the quality of our coffee breaks and bring it to a whole new level – just like that of a Starbucks Coffee Master :)
