Baby: Common Baby Skin Problems

The only rash I ever encountered with Ashton was diaper rash. Surprisingly, it went away on its own and after I stopped applying diaper rash cream. Until last month when Ashton got a vaccine for measles, rashes appeared on his back. Few days ago I also noticed what I suspect as insect bites yet the redness seem to get larger. Bumps were also larger and more tender than usual.

List of common baby skin problems and my personal tried and tested remedies:

1. Baby acne – use breastmilk. Dab breastmilk on the baby’s affected skin. This usually goes away on its own. Ashton was prescribed Physiogel which I also think is effective and safe since it does not contain any steroids.

2. Diaper rash – best to use water and cotton when cleaning up your baby’s bottom. Make sure that the area is dry before you put on the diaper.

3. Cradle cap – these scale-like flakes of skin atop your baby’s scalp will peel off on their own. Usually with strands of baby’s hair. Don’t panic because new hair will regrow on the scalp.

Inside I am having a silent panic attack but I checked if he had fever or decreased appetite. Both symptoms were negative. Usually, lost of appetite means baby is not feeling well. Obviously, fever means the body is trying to fight some virus.

Fortunately I saw that the bites have decreased in size but I have scheduled an appointment with the doctor just to be sure. Baby rashes can be a sign of something serious and unlike adult skin that responds to the best acne treatment, it is important to get the prescribed medicine from the pediatrician.
